In this increasingly globalized world, shopping for something unique has become harder: the jacket you spotted in a Budapest Zara shop will invariably pop up for sale in Senayan when you return from holidays to Jakarta, both labeled "Hecho en China", or made in China.
The famous Oxford Street in London is no exception, bustling with shoppers carrying Marks & Spencer, FCUK, or Top Shop bags. Many of the shops in London can also be found in Jakarta and almost all the brands exist somewhere else in the world.
Yet, there are still some corners of London where the odd pieces of clothing can be purchased, with independent shops thriving with items crafted by young British designers. Brick Lane is one of those areas.

During my visit, sponsored by Air Asia X and Visit Britain, a group of Southeast Asian journalists including myself were taken to Brick Lane, also known as London's curry capital or Banglatown for its Bangladeshi shops selling curry. The area has become the epicenter of the Bangladeshi community in London, with Bengali street signs planted next to English ones.
An old large building - that used to be the Truman Brewery - stands out from the rest of the street as it is packed with independent shops. "The Truman Brewery has been an important creative and cultural hub," said Kevin Caruth, a guide from Urban Gentry, a company specializing in tailor-made visits of London.
One shop at the old brewery sells clothing made out recycled material. You can make a one-of-a-kind item from one of your old garments; just bring it to the shop and the designer will make it into a new item for you. Other shops sell vintage clothing.
According to Kevin, many shops in the area encourage young designers to display their collections there by offering affordable rental rates, also allowing talent scouts from major chains to find budding designers. Success stories include designers from independent shops ending up having their own lines of clothing in major chains like Top Shop, said Kevin.
Besides Brick Lane and the Truman Brewery, East London has several neighborhoods boasting dozens of independent shops. Naturally, many Asian tourists flock to the village.
"Tourists from China are on our top 10 list of customers, as well as from Malaysia and Indonesia," said Anna Keddie, marketing director at Value Retail, the company promoting Bicester Village.
The village is one of nine "Chic Outlet Shopping" centers in Europe and the only one in the UK. Because all the villages derive part of their income from tourists, they give the latter easy access to VIP Club memberships which give shoppers additional discounts or other perks at most of the shops.

Crisis forcing Asia to cut reliance on exports

Cutting Asia's reliance on exports for growth has taken on new urgency as the global economic crisis sends trade into a tailspin. But many economies in the region are unprepared for such a profound shift.
As some 3,000 officials wrapped up the Asian Development Bank's annual meeting Tuesday held in Bali, Indonesia, there was no shortage of exhortations for Asia to boost domestic consumption - or risk remaining captive to the economic fortunes of the U.S. and Europe.
Declaring the era of rich Western countries having unlimited appetite for exports "has passed," ADB president Haruhiko Kuroda urged Asia's governments to reduce dependence on trade. Japan's Finance Minister Kaoru Yosano said the region must lift consumer spending to "avoid economic meltdown."
Such calls aren't new. "Rebalancing" and charting a new "growth paradigm" have been much-discussed at Asia's economic talkfests for years. Yet the backdrop of the global slump and the possibility of years of feeble growth in the U.S., one of Asia's biggest markets, may add some substance to the rhetoric.
"Now that Asia has experienced the drag from slow overseas demand, countries may be more inclined to rebalance," said David Cohen, head of Asian forecasting at Action Economics in Singapore. "There is no guarantee that the U.S. is going to get back on track anytime soon."
The head of the U.S. delegation to the ADB, Karen Mathiasen, said the shift would be a "profound adjustment" that won't be easily realized but is essential to sustaining a global recovery.
Japan, Asia's biggest economy, has already outlined yet another program to move its focus from exports to domestic sectors like "green" technologies, medical services and pop culture, though details remain vague.
Prime Minister Taro Aso said last month the long-term plan aims to increase domestic demand by at least 40 trillion yen ($400 billion) within three years and add between 1.4 million and 2 million new jobs.
Japan first began trying to boost domestic demand in the late 1980s, but it remains heavily reliant on exports as households continued to be subordinated to corporate priorities.
China is also trying to turn the tide. Its $586 billion stimulus package aims to boost consumer spending by pumping money into the economy through higher spending on highways and other public works. But there too consumer welfare is sacrificed for big, politically powerful corporate interests.
Efforts to prop up recession-hit economies with massive spending won't make much difference if they're not combined with a fundamental change in direction, experts say.
"It would take some years before we see any significant shift" toward domestic consumption, said Cohen.
As a strategy for powering growth and lifting tens of millions out of extreme poverty, exporting has proved remarkably successful for Asia. Exports account for about 50 percent of developing Asia's GDP, up from nearly 30 percent in 1990, according to the International Monetary Fund.
But it has come at a cost. Exporting created jobs but competition in international markets gave an advantage to the nations with the cheapest labor costs, keeping wages in poor nations low and stunting the growth of domestic service industries.
Meanwhile, China has for years plowed its ballooning reserves into low yielding assets like U.S. Treasury bills at the expense of bigger investments in schools, hospitals, roads and other infrastructure that would boost growth in the longer term.
"In small economies, it's always easier to export to the global market" than develop their domestic market, said ADB's chief economist Jong-Wha Lee. "But for a big country, like China, you cannot assume that you can export your way to growth continuously," he said.
To maintain or enlarge its share of export markets, a developing country faces pressure to keep lowering prices, often through keeping its currency weak, Lee said.
"That's not in China's interests or global interests," he said. "It suppresses consumption" by keeping wages low, and holds back domestic industries.
Analysts say stock and bond markets in Asia's emerging nations aren't yet developed enough to efficiently channel money from savers to the entrepreneurs thirsty for capital to start businesses serving their local markets.
A lack of state pension systems and affordable health insurance also keeps domestic spending in check. Knowing there's no safety net, Asia's workers save more than they otherwise would while also using part of their incomes to support their parents.
Saving rates in Asia are high because "people are worried about their future" said Lee, the ADB economist.
Change will be nearly impossible for some economies. The populations of Hong Kong and Singapore, both rich from exports, are deemed too small to support big industries focused on their domestic markets.
The overhaul will take time, the ADB's president says.
"It's not a matter of months. It's a matter of a few years but not decades," Kuroda said. "The U.S. economy is making such a huge adjustment, so why not the Asian side?"

Asian nations reach deals to cushion crisis, pool $120b

As a commitment of self-reliance to cushion the economy from deteriorating further, thirteen Asian nations reached a deal Sunday to set up a US$120 billion fund for emergencies.

The deal of pooling a regional fund comes as a follow up to the Chiang Mai Initiative Multilateralization (CMIM) scheme set up in 2000 between the 10 members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nation (ASEAN) and Japan, China and South Korea (ASEAN+3).

The fund will offer emergency balance of payments support to any country hit with extreme currency devaluation and capital flight; such as that which ignited the Asian financial crisis in 1997.

After the crisis, the region has learnt that it needs all the resources to be able to independently weather any kind of economic storm.

"The current global situation requires more concerted efforts to enhance confidence, maintain financial stability and prevent further decline in economic growth."

"The deepening global economic downturn, coupled with heightened risk aversion in financial markets, has adversely impacted trade and investment in the region," the region's finance ministers said in a joint statement on the sidelines of the Asian Development Bank's (ADB) annual meeting in Bali, Indonesia.

Thailand's Finance Minister Korn Chatikavanji said the regional fund could be implemented before the end of the year to "address short-term liquidity problems in the region and supplement the existing international financial arrangements".

Japan and China have each committed to provide 32 percent of the regional fund, South Korea will contribute 16 percent, while the remaining 20 percent will come from the 10 ASEAN members.

The ASEAN nations are: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

Indonesia, ASEAN's largest economy, is entitled to borrow as much as US$12 billion to strengthen its fairly vulnerable $54.84 foreign exchange reserves against the financial turmoil, if need be.

An independent regional surveillance unit will be established immediately to monitor and analyse the region's economies and support CMIM decision-making.

"As a start, we have agreed to establish an advisory panel of experts to work closely with the ADB and the ASEAN secretariat [for the setting up of the surveillance unit]," Korn said.

Surveillance by member countries is preferred because most of the ASEAN+3 nations have suffered traumatic experiences from tapping financial support from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which is regularly tied with seemingly unfavorable and ineffective terms and condition. Members can borrow money from the fund without having to worry about being put under the strict supervision of the IMM.

However, members withdrawing more than 20 percent of their real need from the fund are required to be supervised by the IMF.

Aside from the regional fund, Japan will offer 6 trillion yen ($60 billion) of yen-denominated swap facilities to help the member countries during any emergencies, according to Kaoru Yosano, Japan’s finance, economic and fiscal policy minister.

He also said Asia’s biggest economy would guarantee up to 500 billion yen ($5 billion) in yen-denominated bonds, or Samurai bonds, issued in Japanese markets by developing countries.

The ASEAN+3 nations have a total combined population of 2 billion people, GDP of $9.09 billion, and foreign reserves of $3.6 trillion. Effectively, the group represents one-third of the world’s population, 16 percent of the world’s GDP; it holds more than half of the world’s gold reserves.

The region's economies may grow by 3.4 percent this year and 6.3 percent next year, according to the ADB.

Chris Garrett writes a good post on Can Anyone Make Money From Blogging? and says that the answer to the question is ‘yes’ - but then qualifies his answer with a number of factors.
My own answer to the question would be very similar.
I would also say that it is possible for anyone to make money from a blog (I’ve seen people from many countries, of most ages - from children to elderly people - male and female, able bodied to people with a variety of physical hardships and people of different education and social levels make a go of blogging for an income). It is possible but the reality is that most who try don’t make a lot of money.
The reasons for this include the list that Chris comes up with and more. The reasons why many who try don’t make much money blogging are many but here’s 10 reasons that come to mind:

Not enough time - as Chris writes, it is hard work and takes time on an ongoing (daily ideally) basis
Giving Up too quickly - most successful blogs don’t hit their strides til they are at least 12 months old
Non commercial Topic - some topics are easier than others to find significant income streams for
Lack of writing skills - like it or not, blogging is a written form and unless you are able to write you’ll almost always struggle
Breaking the Rules - some bloggers get greedy and break the rules, either of the ad programs they use or the unwritten rules of blogging
Distractions for the core functions of a blog - many get caught up in one of the many distractions that challenge bloggers and forget to concentrate on their actual writing of quality content
Unluckiness - sometimes a blog’s success hinges on a lucky moment - miss it or fail to take the opportunities that come and you might miss significant rewards
Taking Readers for Granted - I’ve seen a couple of blogs over the last year or so that fell over because the blogger became so self important that they forgot that a blog rises and falls upon whether it’s readers find the blog useful to them.
Spreading self too thinly - many bloggers have the gift of being visionaries (a good thing) but fail to have the gift of realism. The result is that many start things that they have no way of seeing through or spread themselves across too many projects too quickly (to the detriment of all of them).

You’ll need to be willing to price your ads relatively cheaply until your traffic grows - but securing these types of ad deals is better than no income for your blog and means that you already have relationships with advertisers to grow as your traffic increases.

Tanjung Pinang - Tourism Place

Buddhist Temple. Contains a fantastic sculpture park. There is also a newly built Buddist temple which house the largest sitting Guang Ying (Goddess of mercy) in S.E.A. Locate approx. 10 miles from Tg. Pinang downtown.

Penyengat Island. Places to visit include the Masjid Raya - the old vice-royal mosque, which locals claim is made "from egg". There are also a few more mosques and graveyards to see, some of which include royalties.
Senggarang Temples is a temple complex including Chinese and Hinduist worshipping places. This includes a 40-armed statue and several animal deities. From there, you can walk to a stilt house village, where there is also a temple that a tree has grown into. There are boats going from Tanjung Pinang piers to Senggarang frequently, haggle for price.

Sungai Ular Buddhist Temple, or Snake River Temple, is a little way up the so-called snake river (for its windings). The best (and probably only) way to get there is by boat. Go there for some gory murals depicting the Chinese version of hell.

The old ruler's palace and royal tombs, among them the grave of the respected Sultan Haji, who also was creater and author of the first Malay Language grammar book, are among the legacies left by the Riau sultanate.
The cultural center for stage performances of Malay music and dances is located in Tanjungpinang. The center organizes regular festivals and other performances such as music and dance.

Raja Haji Fisabillah Monument, downtown Tanjung Pinang. 28m tall and raised in memory of the national hero Raja Haji who died during the herotic battle of Malacca against the Dutch in 1784. Tanjung Pinang, is the main port town on Bintan Island, where trade and passenger ships link to all parts of Indonesia and Singapore. Bintan is a good point of departure to other islands in the area and only a two-hour boat ride away from Singapore. A large section of the old part of the town was built in traditional local fashion, on stilts, over the water, although today, its face is changing rapidly, with several first-class hotels and yachting marinas being developed. Seafood at the night market is great. Trikora Beach is about 50 kilometers south of Tanjung Pinang on the eastern side of the island. Good beaches are also found on the islands of Terkulai and Soreh, about an hour away by boat.

Tanjung Pinang is a busy little town on Bintan Island, visited by traders from Jakarta, Medan, Palembang and other big cities in Indonesia, Tanjung Pinang is only a two-hour boat ride away from Singapore. The town has a Museum located on Katamso Street. A large section of the old part of the town was built in traditional local fashion, on stilts, over the water. Bintan is a good point of departure to other islands in the area.
The main town on Bintan is Tanjung Pinang, which can be easily reached from Singapore. It is located on the western part of Bintan Bay, and is also the largest town on Riau Archipelago. Batam is one of the largest islands in the Riau archipelago, and not long ago it was just another poor island with coastal villages and unspoiled nature. The declaration of the Batam free trade zone in 1989 has turned the island upside down, after just a few years of rapid construction it now has a modern airport, tourist and business centers and a still growing infrastructure that has changed the island completely.It is no secret that nearby Singapore is the role model, and the goal is eventually to become one of the biggest ports of Southeast Asia and a major center of international trade, industry and commerce. The strategic location close to the Malacca Strait and Singapore will certainly help reaching this goal, but like the rest of Indonesia the economy and development here was dealt a major blow during and after the Asia economic crisis in the late 1990's.Batam is actually one of fastest growing tourist destinations in Indonesia in terms of visitor arrivals. There are several tourist resorts here with luxurious hotels and golf courses. Many visitors however choose to use Batam only as an entry point, it is only 40 minutes from Singapore with boat, and then leave with the first available transport to other destinations in Indonesia.
History The history of Batam is tightly interwoven with nearby Bintan island and the rest of the Riau archipelago. Traditionally most of the people live in coastal villages, while the "Orang Laut" (sea people) continue to live on boathouses and boats and generally fish for a living. Some of their catch are sold to Singapore. Culture
Even if Batam is multi-ethnic it is still the Malayan culture and Islam which forms the root of the local culture. Upset by this he orders the newborn to be expelled to the jungle. A couple of years later he is told that the snail has begun to grow, and he asks for the snail to be brought to the Royal Palace where the shell is broken. To his surprise and joy he can see a beautiful princess appear from the broken shell, and he names her Putri Siput Gondang (Princess Siput Gondang), celebrations are then held for seven days and seven nights.
But also other cultures contribute to the Batam community, and in the "Padepokan Seni" art center in Sekupang you can see arts and crafts from all over Indonesia, as well as various kinds of performances which are staged every day for visitors and tourists. Another art center in Sekupang is "Desa Seni", Indonesian art village, which main objective is to "maintain, conserve and develop Indonesian culture", and also to manage the Cultural Institute where qualified instructors conduct various shows and courses.
Accommodation and foodYou may easily find hotels of all standards here, from five star hotels with all facilities to budget losmen. The most expensive rooms can be found in Nagoya or at the tourist resorts at Nongsa on the northeast part of the island. The tourism here has seen a steep decline lately, so you may get a good bargain. More reasonable priced rooms can be found in Nagoya or elsewhere, but the budget rooms are said to be of less quality and overpriced compared to most other areas in Indonesia.Riau is well known for its fresh and delicious seafood. Prawns, live fish, lobsters, clams and shellfish are cooked in a variety of styles, a local specialty is the "gong-gong" conch shell dipped in a spicy sauce. To find a seafood restaurant is no problem, especially in Nagoya, Batu Besar, Batu Merah and Telaga Punggur. At Nongsa you can eat in a "kelong", a restaurant built over the sea on stilts. Singaporeans even come here for a late night meal at a Batam restaurant and return the same evening to Singapore. You can of course also find other traditional Indonesian food here, like Padang food. In Nagoya you can try the night markets or the Pujasera Nagoya food center.
SekupangThe port of Sekupang, the most common port of arrival if you go by boat from Singapore.Most travelers from Singapore to Batam will enter via Sekupang, where ferries shuttle constantly between the two ports. The ferries depart from World Trade Center in Singapore and arrive at Sekupang about 45 minutes later, the first ferry will leave at 7.30 am, and the last about 8 pm. At Sekupang you will easily find a taxi that can take you to other locations of the island, the airport or other ferry terminals, you will also find hotel and ferry counters here. The domestic terminal with boats to the Sumatra mainland is right next door.
Waterfront City BatamThe Waterfront City is a resort area on the west coast of Batam, south of Sekupang, that mostly attracts Singaporean visitors. Some of the activities here are water sports, bungee-jumping, indoor skiing or simply checking out the nightclubs.
Batam CenterThis area facing Tering Bay is planned to be the pride of Batam with a business district, hotels, shops and a marina. Construction started on 29th of November 1987 when President Soharto and Lee Kuan Yew, Singapore's first Prime Minister, each planted a banyan tree here as a symbol of the friendship between the two countries. Prime Minister Mahathir of Malaysia planted his tree later. The center is still not completed.
NagoyaView from one of the many hotels in Nagoya.Nagoya (also known as Lubuk Baja) is the original center of Batam, and not a very attractive town with a mix of old and new characterless buildings. But if you are looking for local entertainment this must be the place, with plenty of shops, food stalls, nightlife, discos, music lounges, karaoke, restaurants and many small hotels. It is also at the present Batams center of business, trade and finance. Batu Ampar is the port of Nagoya, and from here you can catch a ferry to Singapore, although not as frequently as from Sekupang. Several boats leave daily to Johor Baru in Malaysia as well.
NongsaThe north-east peninsula of Nongsa is the main tourist area on Batam, an hour's drive from Sekupang. The lovely resorts were built with Singaporeans in mind, here they can escape from the bustling town to the north and visit one of the golf clubs, eat seafood, bake in the sun on the beach or swim in the sea. Don't expect to find any cheap hotels here.
KabilThis is the site for a large deep-water port under construction, called the Asia Port. When completed it will be able to accommodate very large ships. From nearby Telaga Punggur you can go by boat to neighboring Pulau Bintan, in Kabil fishing village you can also find several seafood restaurants, and watch the passing sampans and fishing craft while you eat.
TransportThe best way to get around on the island is by taxi, but you can also go by public transport if comfort is not your main concern, like share taxis. Travel agents can also provide air-conditioned minibuses. Hang Nadim, the modern regional airport, can serve the largest passenger planes, and from here you can reach other destinations in Indonesia, including Jakarta, Pekanbaru, Bandung and Medan. Both Garuda and Singapore Airlines have regular flights here.View from the Singapore - Sekupang ferry, close to Sekupang.As mentioned above there are several boat services to Singapore, as well as Malaysia and to the Sumatran mainland. The ferries depart daily from World Trade Center in Singapore and arrive at Sekupang about 45 minutes later, the first ferry will leave at 7.30 am, and the last about 8 pm. Less frequent services to Singapore leave from Batu Ampar and Nongsa. The service to Malaysia leave from Batu Ampar and to the Sumatran mainland from Sekupang. Telaga Punggur, 30 km southeast of Nagoya, is the main port for speedboats to Tanjung Pinang on Nearby Pulau Bintan, the trip will take about 45 minutes, there are also three boats a day to Tanjung Pinang from Sekupang.
Other travel factsBatam is a duty free zone, and in Nagoya or at the ferry terminal you can shop for items like cigarettes, alcoholic drinks, perfumes, chocolate as well as local handicrafts from all over the Indonesian archipelago. There are many banks in Nagoya, and you can easily find a money exchange counter or a cash machine which accept Visa or MasterCard. Singapore dollars are as welcome as Indonesian rupiah. The main post office is in Batam center south of Nagoya.Batam may not make a good first impression on a western tourist with it's ugly architecture, expensive hotels and unfinished construction sites, but if you like you can easily spend some days here. Nothing annoys a reader more than having to wade through those constant pop-up (or pop-under) windows when trying to read something. Excessive ads on a website can also affect the user experience as ad servers may slow the loading of the web page, leading to increased wait times. And for users on a limited internet plan, loading useless ad graphics to their browser actually adds to the bandwidth tally, meaning they would have to pay more as they download more.

Getting the attention of the online user is very difficult as each person has their own discriminating tastes and needs. But, if implemented well, the rewards of a digital communication campaign can be bountiful. Just don't forget to follow up.
Many people are not too keen to being on a corporate database, but once they understand the benefits they may be less inclined to object. That is why services like Amazon.com are pretty successful in selling more books, as they can recommend new titles based on the purchase history of their users.
Or, Air Asia emailing its user base new destinations and prices. If people weren't thinking about a vacation, that email may make them reconsider.
So once a campaign is done, what can you do with the massive data that has been accumulated? Based on the results of the campaign, could you communicate once more to your target audience to help spread the word? Start a member-get-member program? Offer rewards to participate in marketing surveys that would further improve your product/service?
Too often companies trying to enter the online world fail to see the big picture of user/customer engagement. It is not about flashy ads or the amount of the reward/prizes (although it can help) but how the brand can be of help to the user, be it a book, a drink or a car.
So, before businesses think about dipping their toes in the internet world with a simple ad, think again of the long-term goals and the lost opportunities if you only think about a simple two-week-long program.

Asia tightens controls against swine flu threat

HONG KONG: Asia tightened its already strict measures to keep swine flu from spreading across the region on Tuesday, after the World Health Organisation warned of a significant increase in the risk of a pandemic. New Zealand confirmed three cases among 11 who are assumed to have caught the virus as the number of suspected infections across the region jumped. Australia said it was probing 70 possible infections among those who had recently returned from Mexico or the United States. South Korea reported a single case and Thai medical authorities placed a woman in quarantine in hospital for tests. Hong Kong said it was testing four people as queues formed outside pharmacies with residents, spurred by memories of the deadly SARS virus, stocking up on medical supplies to counter any potential swine flu outbreak. New Zealand confirmed three cases after samples from nine students and a teacher from Auckland high school Rangitoto College, who had earlier tested positive for influenza A, were tested for swine flu at a Melbourne laboratory. An 11th person from the school was also reported by Auckland health authorities to have tested positive for influenza A on Tuesday evening. They were among a group of 25 people from the school who returned from Mexico on Saturday. "Unfortunately tonight we can confirm New Zealanders have tested positive to swine flu," Health Minister Tony Ryall told a press conference. "It's a time for caution and concern, but not alarm." Officials said they were investigating a total of 43 possible cases and were still trying to trace 18 people who arrived on the same flight from Los Angeles as the main group of school children. In neighbouring Australia, health authorities said they were investigating 70 possible cases and health officials were put on high alert. Health Minister Nicola Roxon said clinical staff had been stationed at all international airports, while airlines operating from the Americas were required to report the health status of passengers before landing. Most countries in the region have already increased airport checks to screen passengers arriving from affected areas and advised against non-essential travel to Mexico, where the virus has killed a suspected 152 people. Thermal scanners have been a common feature in many Asian airports since the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) epidemic of 2003. Japan went one step further, saying it would temporarily tighten visa restrictions for Mexican nationals as part of efforts to stop the virus entering the country and urged Japanese citizens in Mexico to return home. It also booked 500 hotel rooms near Tokyo's Narita International Airport in case it needs them to quarantine infected travellers, Jiji Press reported. The news agency also reported that quarantine officials had started onboard checks of passengers on planes arriving from Mexico, the United States and Canada The World Health Organisation's Keiji Fukuda said a pandemic was not inevitable and that while the hike in its alert level was a "significant step towards pandemic influenza, it's also a phase which says we are not there yet". If the world health body further increased its alert level, Japan would quarantine arrivals suspected of having the virus, as well as those who accompany them and flight attendants, for 10 days of tests, Jiji said. Hong Kong, which was at the forefront of the SARS epidemic in 2003 and has since been on alert for bird flu, has already issued similar guidelines allowing for arrivals to be detained, as has Australia. The first suspected case of the virus in East Asia was reported in a woman in South Korea just back from a trip to Mexico, health officials said. Officials in Seoul said they would double stocks of Tamiflu and other anti-influenza drugs - enough to treat five million people. Countries including New Zealand have said contingency plans drawn up during the bird flu epidemic that reappeared in 2003 meant health authorities had plentiful stocks of anti-flu medication. Health officials in the India resort state of Goa on Tuesday said they were trying to track down 500 British holidaymakers who arrived in the Indian resort state after the outbreak of swine flu. State epidemiologist Rajendra Tamba said they were planning to take throat swab samples of the tourists as a precautionary measure to prevent infection after a number of confirmed cases in Western countries. Health experts have expressed fears that the relatively low death rate and mild symptoms seen in some cases of the current strain could allow the virus to spread faster. However Yuen Kwok-yung, head of microbiology at the University of Hong Kong, said it was too early to establish the extent of the threat. "It is very likely we are at the beginning of a pandemic. Swine influenza virus (referred to as SIV) refers to influenza cases that are caused by Orthomyxoviruses that are endemic to pig populations. SIV strains isolated to date have been classified either as Influenzavirus C or one of the various subtypes of the genus Influenzavirus A.

Swine flu can mutate into a form that allows it to pass from human to human. The strain responsible for the 2009 swine flu outbreak is believed to have undergone this mutation.
Swine influenza is known to be caused by influenza A subtypes H1N1, H1N2,H3N1, H3N2,and H2N3.
In swine, three influenza A virus subtypes (H1N1, H3N2, and H1N2) are circulating throughout the world. In the United States, the H1N1 subtype was exclusively prevalent among swine populations before 1998; however, since late August 1998, H3N2 subtypes have been isolated from pigs. As of 2004, H3N2 virus isolates in US swine and turkey stocks were triple reassortants, containing genes from human (HA, NA, and PB1), swine (NS, NP, and M), and avian (PB2 and PA) lineages Classification SIV strains isolated to date have been classified either as Influenzavirus C or one of the various subtypes of the genus Influenzavirus A

Signs and symptoms
Main symptoms of swine flu in humans.[8]The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have stated that the symptoms of swine flu are similar to those of other strains of human flu, including fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. A few patients have reported that they also suffered from diarrhea and vomiting.
Causes
H5N1
Avian influenza virus H3N2 is endemic in pigs in China and has been detected in pigs in Vietnam, increasing fears of the emergence of new variant strains. Health experts[who?] say pigs can carry human influenza viruses, which can combine (i.e. exchange homologous genome sub-units by genetic reassortment) with H5N1, passing genes and mutating into a form which can pass easily among humans.H3N2 evolved from H2N2 by antigenic shift. In August 2004, researchers in China found H5N1 in pigs.

Nature magazine reported that Chairul Nidom, a virologist at Airlangga University’s tropical disease center in Surabaya, East Java, conducted an independent research study in 2005. He tested the blood of 10 apparently healthy pigs housed near poultry farms in West Java where avian flu had broken out. Five of the pig samples contained the H5N1 virus. The Indonesian government has since found similar results in the same region. Additional tests of 150 pigs outside the area were negative.

Pathophysiology
Influenza viruses bind through hemagglutinin onto sialic acid sugars on the surfaces of epithelial cells; typically in the nose, throat and lungs of mammals and intestines of birds (Stage 1 in infection figure).

Swine flu in humans

People who work with poultry and swine, especially people with intense exposures, are at increased risk of zoonotic infection with influenza virus endemic in these animals, and constitute a population of human hosts in which zoonosis and reassortment can co-occur. Transmission of influenza from swine to humans who work with swine was documented in a small surveillance study performed in 2004 at the University of Iowa.[18] This study among others forms the basis of a recommendation that people whose jobs involve handling poultry and swine be the focus of increased public health surveillance.The 2009 swine flu outbreak is an apparent reassortment of several strains of influenza A virus subtype H1N1, including a strain endemic in humans and two strains endemic in pigs, as well as an avian influenza.
The CDC reports that the symptoms and transmission of the swine flu from human to human is much like seasonal flu, commonly fever, lethargy, lack of appetite and coughing. Some people with swine flu also have reported runny nose, sore throat, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. It is believed to be spread between humans through coughing or sneezing of infected people and touching something with the virus on it and then touching their own nose or mouth. Swine flu cannot be spread by pork products, since the virus is not transmitted through food.The swine flu in humans is most contagious during the first five days of the illness although some people, most commonly children, can remain contagious for up to ten days. Diagnosis can be made by sending a specimen, collected during the first five days, to the CDC for analysis.

The swine flu is susceptible to four drugs licensed in the United States, amantadine, rimantadine, oseltamivir and zanamivir, however, for the 2009 outbreak it is recommended it be treated with oseltamivir and zanamivir.The vaccine for the human seasonal H1N1 flu does not protect against the swine H1N1 flu, even if the virus strains are the same specific variety, as they are antigenically very different.

Prevention
Recommendations to prevent infection by the virus consist of the standard personal precautions against influenza. This includes frequent washing of hands with soap and water or with alcohol-based hand sanitizers, especially after being out in-public. People should avoid touching their mouth, nose or eyes with their hands unless they’ve washed their hands. If people do cough, they should either cough into a tissue and throw it in the garbage immediately, cough into their elbow, or, if they cough in their hand, they should wash their hands immediate
Swine influenza has become a greater problem in recent decades as the evolution of the virus has resulted in inconsistent responses to traditional vaccines. Standard commercial swine flu vaccines are effective in controlling the infection when the virus strains match enough to have significant cross-protection, and custom (autogenous) vaccines made from the specific viruses isolated are created and used in the more difficult cases.

Present vaccination strategies for SIV control and prevention in swine farms, typically include the use of one of several bivalent SIV vaccines commercially available in the United States. Of the 97 recent H3N2 isolates examined, only 41 isolates had strong serologic cross-reactions with antiserum to three commercial SIV vaccines. Since the protective ability of influenza vaccines depends primarily on the closeness of the match between the vaccine virus and the epidemic virus, the presence of nonreactive H3N2 SIV variants suggests that current commercial vaccines might not effectively protect pigs from infection with a majority of H3N2 viruses.

Treatment
The CDC recommends the use of Tamiflu (oseltamivir) or Relenza (zanamivir) for the treatment and/or prevention of infection with swine influenza viruses. The virus isolates that have been tested from the US and Mexico are however resistant to amantadine and rimantadine. If a person gets sick, antiviral drugs can make the illness milder and make the patient feel better faster. They may also prevent serious flu complications. For treatment, antiviral drugs work best if started soon after getting sick (within 2 days of symptoms).

Epidemiology
Outbreaks in swine 2007 Philippine outbreak On August 20, 2007 Department of Agriculture officers investigated the outbreak of swine flu in Nueva Ecija and Central Luzon, Philippines. The mortality rate is less than 10% for swine flu, unless there are complications like hog cholera. On July 27, 2007, the Philippine National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS) raised a hog cholera “red alert” warning over Metro Manila and 5 regions of Luzon after the disease spread to backyard pig farms in Bulacan and Pampanga, even if these tested negative for the swine flu virus.

Outbreaks in humans 1918 Influenza Main article: 1918 flu pandemic The “Spanish” influenza pandemic of 1918–1919 infected one third of the world’s population (or ≈500 million persons at that time) and caused ≈50 million deaths. In the U.S., approximately 675,000 people died of the disease. The impact of this pandemic was not limited to 1918–1919. All influenza A pandemics since that time, and indeed almost all cases of influenza A worldwide (excepting human infections from avian viruses such as H5N1 and H7N7), have been caused by descendants of the 1918 virus, including “drifted” H1N1 viruses and reassorted H2N2 and H3N2 viruses. The latter are composed of key genes from the 1918 virus, updated by subsequently incorporated avian influenza genes that code for novel surface proteins, making the 1918 virus indeed the “mother” of all pandemics.

Before and after 1918, most influenza pandemics developed in Asia and spread from there to the rest of the world. Confounding definite assignment of a geographic point of origin, the 1918 pandemic spread more or less simultaneously in 3 distinct waves during an ≈12-month period in 1918–1919, in Europe, Asia, and North America (the first wave was best described in the United States in March 1918).

1976 U.S. outbreak On February 5, 1976, an army recruit at Fort Dix said he felt tired and weak. He died the next day and four of his fellow soldiers were later hospitalized. Two weeks after his death, health officials announced that swine flu was the cause of death and that this strain of flu appeared to be closely related to the strain involved in the 1918 flu pandemic. Alarmed public-health officials decided that action must be taken to head off another major pandemic, and they urged President Gerald Ford that every person in the U.S. be vaccinated for the disease. The vaccination program was plagued by delays and public relations problems, but about 24% of the population had been vaccinated by the time the program was canceled.
About 500 cases of Guillain-Barré syndrome, resulting in death from severe pulmonary complications for 25 people, were probably caused by an immunopathological reaction to the 1976 vaccine. Other influenza vaccines have not been linked to Guillain-Barré syndrome, though caution is advised for certain individuals, particularly those with a history of GBS.
